Season 18: The Collection (Blu-ray)

The winds of change are blowing: the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) begins his final season travelling with the second Romana (Lalla Ward) and K-9 (John Leeson), and concludes it alongside Adric (Matthew Waterhouse), Nyssa (Sarah Sutton) and Tegan (Janet Fielding). And not only does Season 18 provide a memorable exit for Tom Baker’s Fourth Doctor, it heralds the arrival of a new production team who are all working their hardest to make Doctor Who new and exciting again. The end result is a diverse slate of stories – including gothic horror (State of Decay), courtly intrigue (The Keeper of Traken) and surreal science-fantasy (Warrior’s Gate) – produced in a fresh, dazzling visual style unified by a thematic consistency that makes Season 18 one of strongest overall seasons of the classic era.

This 8 disc set bears all the hallmarks common to classic series collections released on Blu-ray – including a huge suite of existing and never-before-seen extras, a beautifully designed collector’s booklet packed with behind-the-scenes info, and the use of vigorous remastering techniques to present the episodes in the highest possible quality nearly 40 years after they were originally produced. There’s even the first ever Doctor Who spin-off – K-9 & Company – included as a special bonus!

The Macra Terror (Blu-ray)

The Second Doctor and his friends Ben, Polly and Jamie arrive in a seemingly idyllic colony where everyone is happy – but colonists keep on disappearing and the Doctor believes that sinister crab-like creatures known as the Macra are responsible. However, no one in the colony believes in Macra. There is no such thing as Macra. Macra do not exist!

A dystopian satire centred on a community manipulated into an endless cycle of mundane labour and forcefully cheerful recreation, The Macra Terror was significantly ahead of its time. The Blu-ray also includes a bonus disc featuring the return of the Macra in 2007’s Gridlock, along with accompanying commentary.
