Guess who’s back at Christmas? Shh, spoilers!

Series 9 of Doctor Who hasn’t even started airing yet, but that hasn’t stopped the BBC from revealing the surprising and significant guest star of this year’s Christmas Special – Alex Kingston’s Professor River Song!

river“It’s Christmas Day in the future and the TARDIS is parked on a snowy village street, covered in icicles, awaiting its next adventure,” says the blurb on the BBC website. “Time traveller River Song meets her husband’s new incarnation, in the form of Peter Capaldi, for the first time this Christmas.”

The announcement of a new River story is always a bit of a surprise for fans, who can never be sure when the enigmatic archaeologist is going to pop up again – and it appears they’re not the only ones!

“To be honest, I did not know whether River would ever return to the show, but here she is, back with the Doctor for the Christmas special,” said Kingston.

“I met Peter [Capaldi] for the first time at Monday’s read through, we had a laugh, and I am now excited and ready to start filming with him and the Doctor Who team. Christmas in September? Why not!”

The special, which begins filming in Cardiff this week, will be written by Steven Moffat, produced by Nikki Wilson and directed by Douglas Mackinnon. Set to air in the UK on 25 December 2015, it will be followed in January by ‘The Diary of River Song’ – River’s very own audio series from Big Finish Productions.

Series 9 to reach Aussie screens on 20 September

peter-capaldi-in-doctor-whoWhile the trailer does not yet indicate whether Series 9 will be simulcast or not, each episode is guaranteed to reach us less than 24 hours after its UK premiere. The DWCA applauds the ABC for its efforts in bringing the series to our screens and can’t wait to experience it along with all our members.

Mark Gatiss and SFX team join the Doctor Who Festival

The Doctor Who Festival looks set to be chock-full of entertainment, with new guests and activities announced for the event to be held from 21-22 November in Sydney.

Joining Peter Capaldi and Steven Moffat will be new series writer and actor Mark Gatiss, who will host a special writers’ master class over the weekend. Attendees will be given the opportunity to ask questions about how a Doctor Who script is crafted, as well as discover the techniques behind the art of dramatic scriptwriting and how to get work published.

“Watching Doctor Who as a child made me want to become a writer and actor – I used to jot down ideas in my school exercise book,” said Gatiss, who is one of few people to have written for the Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh and Twelfth Doctors. “Doing it for real for the past ten years and four Doctors is a dream come true. At the Doctor Who Festival, you can come and hear the stories behind my stories!”

GATISS Mark (New)Also in attendance will be the Real SFX team, led by Danny Hargreaves. Doctor Who is back on 19 September, reveals trailer

As if yesterday’s trailer for LEGO Dimensions wasn’t enough, now BBC Worldwide has released the first proper preview for Series 9 of Doctor Who! Warning: spoilers ahead!

The trailer reveals a number of characters and monsters set to appear in the upcoming series, including the Zygons, the Daleks and Michelle Gomez as Missy:

Make sure you watch all the way through, as the trailer ends with an appearance from Maisie Williams (set to star in a two-part story titled ‘The Girl Who Died’/‘The Woman Who Lived’). In an intriguing exchange with the Doctor, Williams’ character asks, “What took you so long, old man?” This has led fans to speculate that Williams will be playing a significant character from the Doctor’s past – perhaps even his granddaughter, Susan!

The trailer reveals that Doctor Who will return to screens in the UK on Saturday 19 September. With any luck, the ABC will be continuing its simulcast of the series and bringing it to us on the morning of Sunday 20 September.

LEGO Dimensions to feature the Doctor, Clara and Missy

It looks like Series 9 won’t be the only place where you can catch the Twelfth Doctor and co. this year – Peter Capaldi, Jenna Coleman and Michelle Gomez are set to voice the Doctor, Clara and Missy in the LEGO Dimensions video game, and will be joined by Nicholas Briggs as the Daleks!

lego

Due to launch on 27 September, the game will follow multiple characters from various Lego sets in a virtual adventure. The basic LEGO Dimensions Starter Pack will include a Doctor Who level featuring Daleks, Cybermen and more, while the Doctor Who Level pack add-on will include a LEGO minifigure of the Twelfth Doctor, LEGO models of the TARDIS and K-9 (both playable) and an additional mission-based Doctor Who level. The Doctor will regenerate through all his incarnations if he is defeated, with the TARDIS interior changing to match.

A trailer for the game, released at San Diego Comic Con this week, shows the Twelfth Doctor battling Daleks with the help of characters such as Gandalf, Batman, Homer Simpson and more:

LEGO Dimensions will be available on Xbox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U.

New Who comes to Big Finish!

newwho

In a highly anticipated announcement over the weekend, Big Finish Productions revealed that their line of 2016 audio dramas will include characters and monsters from the revived series of Doctor Who. This is a major coup for the company, whose licence previously covered only Classic Who.

The year will get off to a bang with Alex Kingston reprising her role as River Song – in not one but two boxsets! In January 2016, ‘The Diary of River Song’ will see River heading her own four-hour adventure across space and time, with Paul McGann’s Eighth Doctor making an appearance in the final instalment.

River is also set to appear in an episode of March’s ‘Doom Coalition 2’, the second instalment in a new range of Eighth Doctor adventures following on from the award-winning ‘Dark Eyes’ series. But what role will she have to play, if she doesn’t properly meet the Doctor until his tenth incarnation? We’ll have to wait to find out!

Another recurring character from the Moffat era, Ian McNeice’s Winston Churchill, will be the star of his own boxset. ‘The Churchill Years’, styled as a series of memoirs by the pragmatic Prime Minister, will relate a series of encounters with the Ninth, Tenth and Eleventh Doctors. It is set to feature a full cast of guest actors, at least one of which we have seen before – Danny Horn as the teenage Kazran Sardick from TV’s ‘A Christmas Carol’!

Finally, a special four-story boxset will see the Doctors of the past faced with the villains of a new generation. ‘Classic Doctors, New Monsters’ will match the Fifth Doctor with the Weeping Angels, the Sixth with the Judoon, the Seventh with the Sycorax and the Eighth with a new batch of Sontarans preparing for the Time War!

The news follows on from the previous announcement of ‘UNIT: Extinction’ – the first in a series of boxsets to feature Jemma Redgrave as Kate Stewart and Ingrid Oliver as Osgood – as well as ‘Torchwood: Conspiracy’, starring John Barrowman as Captain Jack Harkness. It’s clearly a great time to be an audio-loving Doctor Who fan, and who knows – perhaps it’s only a matter of time before Big Finish adds David Tennant or Matt Smith to their collection of Doctors!

All these releases and more can be pre-ordered now from the DWCA Shop. For more information, email shop@doctorwhoaustralia.org.
