DWCA Publishing releases 2018 Zerinza yearbook

The Doctor Who Club of Australia is pleased to announce the return of its Zerinza yearbook, and it’s full to the brim with interviews, fiction, comics and articles.

DWCA Book Club August – The Missy Chronicles

In celebration of Michelle Gomez’s upcoming return to the Whoniverse in The Diary of River Song – Series 5, announced by Big Finish earlier this month, the DWCA Book Club will be reading six short stories following the adventures of the Doctor’s favourite frenemy: The Missy Chronicles.

When she’s not busy amassing armies of Cybermen, or manipulating the Doctor and his companions, Missy has plenty of time to kill (literally). In this all new collection of stories about the renegade Time Lord we all love to hate, you’ll discover just some of the mad and malevolent activities Missy gets up to while she isn’t distracted by the Doctor.

The Missy Chronicles is available now will be discussed at the DWCA Book Club meeting on Friday 3 August. You can also comment on our Facebook page if you can’t make the event.

DWCA coming to Supanova Melbourne

The DWCA is excited to announce that we are exhibiting at Supanova Comic Con & Gaming, being held at Melbourne Showgrounds from 21-22 April – this weekend!

The club is a regular attendee of the Sydney show but this will be our first time in Melbourne, lured by the headline guests Peter Capaldi, John Barrowman and Pearl Mackie. You will find us in the Doctor Who Fan Zone in Fan Club Central, part of The Alley in the Grand Pavilion building.

The club will have on display some recent issues of our magazine, Data Extract, which is provided to all DWCA members four times per year as part of their membership. Featuring articles, interviews, reviews, short stories and more, the magazine accepts submissions from all Australian Doctor Who fans!

Back issues of Data Extract will be available at the table at a discounted rate of $5 each. Sign up as a member at the table and receive the issue of your choice for free!

New or renewing members will also be eligible to receive the 2018 issue of the club’s yearbook, Zerinza. Coming soon to the inboxes all DWCA members, this free e-book features a whole host of content – including never-before-printed interviews with Doctor Who luminaries such as Nicholas Courtney (the Brigadier), Camille Coduri (Jackie Tyler), composer Dudley Simpson and more!

DWCA Book Club June – The Day of the Doctor

BBC Books is bringing back the classic Target-style Doctor Who novelisations for a select number of New Who stories, and the DWCA Book Club is celebrating by reading the most ambitious of them all: The Day of the Doctor.

Novelised by Steven Moffat himself, the book enables readers to relive the magic of the 50th anniversary special in a style that has been beloved by Doctor Who fans for generations. It is one of four New Series stories to receive the Target treatment, the others being Rose by Russell T Davies, The Christmas Invasion by Jenny T Colgan and Twice Upon a Time by Paul Cornell.

The Day of the Doctor will be released in Australia in eBook form on 5 April and as a paperbook on 16 April, and will be discussed at the DWCA Book Club meeting on Friday 1 June. You can also comment on our Facebook page if you can’t make the event.

DWCA 2018 Survey now open

The DWCA has announced the release of our 2018 survey, providing members with the opportunity to have their say on how the club can better serve them.

The survey is open to both DWCA members and non-members and takes 15 minutes to complete. Respondents go into the running to win a year’s free DWCA membership, and you’ll also be helping to create a better club for both present and future members.

The survey will be open online until 30 June and can be completed here. We’d love to hear from you.

Data Extract 238 Released

Issue 238 of Australia’s longest running Doctor Who magazine, Data Extract, is making its way to members!

For this first issue of 2018, we have an interview with Adam Richard. We also have another adventure with the Eleventh Doctor and Eleanor and all of the regular columns and features you’ve come to know and love!

DWCA Mega Family Picnic – Sunday April 8th 2018

For the first time ever, the DWCA is holding an event for all its local groups on the same day – our annual family picnic!

The picnic is usually held by the Sydney branch of the club as a way to bring fans together in a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. Attendees are encouraged to bring a plate to share, while the organisers will provide various games and activities to keep everyone entertained.

This year, all DWCA local groups are invited to take part in the event at a time and location convenient to them. Picnics are currently confirmed for the following:

  • Sydney – Burwood Park near the BBQ facilities, 11am to 3pm
  • Allora – Stuart Henry Park, from 11am
  • Central West NSW – Borenore Karst Conservation Reserve, 11am to 5pm

So save the date now, and be sure to check the DWCA website for more information on the picnic happening closest to you. All picnics will be listed at http://dwca.org.au/events/, along with our other local group activities for 2018.

Data Extract News Editor wanted

Data Extract, the official magazine of the Doctor Who Club of Australia, is seeking a volunteer to join our friendly team of columnists as a News Editor! The News Editor is responsible for delivering a news column for four issues of Data Extract a year, covering all the latest updates in the worlds of Doctor Who. They may also, pending discussions, be responsible for writing and uploading timely news updates to the DWCA website, as well as sharing these updates on Facebook.

If you love Doctor Who, and are a keen or aspiring writer, please don’t hesitate to send an expression of interest (including any relevant experience you have) to publications@doctorwhoaustralia.org. All applications will be considered. Further, if you have any Doctor Who-related short stories, article or artwork you’d like to see published, please feel free to contact us at the same email address. Adam Richard joins Look Who’s Talking!

The DWCA is pleased to announce that Whovians panellist Adam Richard will be joining Third Doctor companion actor Katy Manning at the club’s upcoming Look Who’s Talking event, to be held on 13 January at Burwood Library, Sydney.

Adam has become a good friend to the DWCA over the past couple of months, attending events in both Sydney and Newcastle in the latter part of 2017. We look forward to chatting with him about the Whovians Christmas special, and how hard it was keeping the Twelfth Doctor’s final story under wraps!
Adam will be joining Katy in photograph and autograph sessions on the day, with all attendees receiving complimentary autograph tokens for both guests. Additional autograph tokens can be purchased for $5 each, while photograph tokens will be available for $10 each (or $15 for a photo with both Katy and Adam.)

Data Extract 237 released

It’s that time again! Issue 237 of Data Extract magazine is working its way to DWCA members, and it’s jam packed with all the latest news and regular features you’ve known to come and love.

In our final issue of 2017, we interview married Doctor Who authors Jon Blum and Kate Orman, who discuss their careers, love and Kate’s tendency to torture the Seventh Doctor.

We also discuss Clara Oswald and her impact on Doctor Who in our regular column ‘Say Something Nice’.
